Intrastate Operating Authority Renewal
If you operate solely intrastate, you must renew your Virginia Operating Authority Certificate, License or Permit, and Operating Authority Registration.
Operating Authority Renewal
A renewal application will be sent to you prior to the expiration of your authority. There is no fee to renew your operating authority. You may mail your completed application to the address shown on the application or take it to any DMV customer service center. Once your application is processed, you will receive a renewal confirmation card.
If you fail to renew your operating authority, you will be required to apply for original authority and comply with all of the application requirements.
Operating Authority Registration
For vehicles NOT registered under IRP (apportioned registration), the operating authority registration expires at the same time that the vehicle registration expires. A renewal notice will be mailed prior to the expiration date of your registration. You can renew by telephone, by mail, online, or at any customer service center.
Although vehicles registered under IRP are required to obtain Intrastate Operating Authority, they are no longer required to be issued corresponding registration credentials.
The operating authority registration fees are $3 per passenger carrier vehicle per year and $10 per property carrier vehicle per year. These fees will be included in your vehicle registration renewal fee. You will not be charged this fee if you also operate interstate.
A $5 per vehicle fee will be added to each vehicle renewal transaction conducted in the DMV Customer Service Center. For IRP registrations, the $5 per vehicle fee will be added unless you are only picking up prepaid credentials.
You may request that DMV send your vehicle registration renewal notice to you by e-mail or telephone instead by regular mail.
Important: The vehicle registration renewal for your IRP vehicles has not changed.
