DMV has taken numerous measures to ensure our customer service centers (CSC) comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and that our disabled customers have access to the services they need in a comfortable environment.
Disabled Parking Plates
DMV offers several different parking placards and plates for customers with disabilities.
Assistance for Customers with Disabilities
Customers with disabilities can easily request special assistance or accommodations by making their needs known when they arrive at the information counter in any CSC. Once a customer's special needs are identified, a customer service representative will assist the customer with his or her transactions, including the completion of forms or testing. If a special needs person requests to take the driver's exam, managers will work with that person to find an appropriate testing environment.
Hearing Impaired Customers
If a customer is hearing impaired, arrangements can be made for an interpreter to assist during the transaction. The Department of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH) provides interpreters, and DMV incurs all costs associated with the use of an interpreter. Either the customer or a DMV employee can contact the DDHH to set up an appointment for the interpreter to meet with the customer at DMV. The phone number at DDHH is (804) 662-9502. Photo IDs for the hearing impaired are available from any DMV office.
The Visor Alert program issues visor and wallet cards to hearing impaired drivers to help these drivers and police officers to communicate more effectively with each other.
Medical Indicators on Driver’s Licenses
Virginia driver's license applicants may request that one or more medical indicators be placed on their license. Applicants must present a signed statement from a licensed physician, confirming the applicant's condition.
Medical indicator codes appear on the front of a driver’s license under the word ”restrictions” to identify the disability to law enforcement. The code is defined on the back of the license.
