• How can I prepare for getting my learner's permit?
  • You will need to take a vision screening and pass a two-part knowledge exam in order to get your learner's permit. Tthe best way to prepare for the knowledge exam is to first study the Virginia Driver's Manual and then take the sample knowledge exam online.
• Can I get my driver's license once I have completed all the requirements?
  • If you are under 18, you will receive your first driver's license in a juvenile licensing ceremony. In this ceremony, teenage drivers and their parents or legal guardians appear before a judge to receive a permanent driver's license. After you have held your learner's permit for 9 months, completed a driver education course, and are at least 16 years and 3 months, you will receive a notice instructing you and your parent or guardian when to report for the licensing ceremony.
• Is there a curfew for teen drivers?
  • Yes. Virginia law prohibits drivers under 18 from driving between midnight and 4am. An exception may be made in the event of an emergency or when travelling to or from work. See Teen Driving Restrictions for more information.
• Can I lose my driving privileges? If so, how?
  • If you have committed 3 demerit point traffic violations while you were under 18, DMV will revoke your permit or license for one year or until you reach age 18, whichever is longer. See Points/Violations for Drivers Under Age 18 for more information.
