Additional Fees Required with Multiple Orders when Reinstating Driving Privileges
RICHMOND - Under a new Virginia law effective July 1, 2011, Virginia drivers with more than one suspension, revocation, and/or disqualification order will pay a $5 fee for each additional order as well as a reinstatement fee. A customers receives orders after the court or DMV has taken away his driving privilege. For example, if you are reinstating your driving privilege and have three effective orders, you will pay the highest reinstatement fee, plus $5 for the second order and $5 for the third order.
The additional $5 fee is referred to as a Multiple Order Fee (MOF) and will help offset the Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) administrative costs associated with processing the compliance of multiple orders on an individual's record. Previously, DMV would process the multiple complicated transactions, collect the reinstatement fee and no additional fees were collected.
Customers with a suspension, revocation and/or disqualification order receive notification from DMV by mail. The notice will indicate whether the customer must pay a multiple order fee to reinstate driving privileges. Also effective July 1, 2011, customers can pay Multiple Order Fees via the DMV website, www.dmvNOW.com.
Customers do not have to pay all Multiple Order Fees at the same time. The customer may pay each $5 Multiple Order Fee individually, provided the reinstatement fee has been satisfied in full. However, driving privileges will not be reinstated until all fees are paid.
Customers with multiple orders in effect prior to July 1, 2011, may be subject to Multiple Order Fees. The following scenarios are published on the DMV website, www.dmvNOW.com and may help a customer know in advance whether additional fees are required.
- If you have paid the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011and are eligible to obtain a license, no Multiple Order Fee will be required.
- If you have paid the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011 and you are still not eligible to obtain a license due to outstanding additional requirements for reinstatement, no Multiple Order Fee will be required unless a new order goes into effect on or after July 1, 2011.
- If you have not paid the reinstatement fee prior to July 1, 2011 and you are not eligible to obtain a license, you will be required to pay the reinstatement fee and then a Multiple Order Fee for each additional order.
If a suspension/revocation/disqualification order is received on or after July 1, 2011:
- If you receive only one order, and have no other effective orders requiring a reinstatement fee, no Multiple Order Fee will be required. However, you will be required you to pay the reinstatement fee for the order received on or after July 1, 2011.
- If you have other effective orders requiring a reinstatement fee, you will be required to pay the highest reinstatement fee and a $5 Multiple Order Fee for each additional order.
