February 28 is Deadline for Transportation Safety Grant Applications
Submissions Accepted Through DMV Website

RICHMOND - The DMV Virginia Highway Safety Office (VAHSO) is accepting applications to support programs throughout Virginia that strive to reduce traffic deaths and injuries. The deadline for transportation safety grant submissions is February 28, 2013.

The funding period for approved applications is October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. Applicants selected for the program participate on a cost reimbursement basis.

Interested applicants are required to make submissions online at www.dmvNOW.com. To receive access to the online application, applicants should contact the project monitor assigned to their area. Visit http://dmvnow.com/webdoc/safety/resources/safety_contacts.asp for a list of project monitors. Project monitors can answer specific questions about the guidelines for grant applications. Before applying for a grant, law enforcement applicants attend a mandatory workshop, and new applicants are required to attend training.

Applications must support Virginia’s primary transportation safety goal of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes. Programs receiving grant funds work toward increasing safety belt usage; deterring drunk driving, speeding and distracted driving; and promoting motorcycle, pedestrian, bike, teen and senior driver safety.

The VAHSO is responsible for administering the funds and has established measurable objectives for each of the nearly 400 grant requests awarded each year. Some examples of previously funded grant programs are:

• Multi-jurisdictional Selective Enforcement: an effort between local and state law enforcement agencies that shows regional commitment to traffic law enforcement and improves visibility of these efforts.
• Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign: a statewide campaign to combat impaired driving, combining media efforts with state and local law enforcement mobilization.
• Click It or Ticket, a safety belt enforcement mobilization operated by the Virginia State Police and local law enforcement
