Electronic Acknowledgement

DMV verifies that a motor vehicle is properly insured by comparing owner and vehicle identification information on file at DMV with liability insurance information on the owner and vehicle transmitted to DMV by any insurance company. If no record of liability insurance is found, DMV requires the motor vehicle owner to furnish insurance information.

When the vehicle owner furnishes DMV with their insurance company name and policy number, DMV then forwards that information to the named insurance company for verification.

That insurance company verifies or denies coverage for the vehicle either by Internet or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Insurance companies reporting by EDI can receive and respond to these acknowledgements electronically.

We encourage insurance companies reporting by EDI to use the electronic acknowledgement process.

Insurance companies not reporting by EDI can receive and respond to these acknowledgements electronically using the Internet process. To establish an Internet link with DMV, complete the "Application for Extranet Transaction Access" Form US531E and mail to DMV. Disregard the fee and documentation mentioned on the application, it does not apply to this process.
